Internet Safety Poster

  • Not everyone on the internet is who they say they are. Protect yourself by treating people you meet with skepticism.
  • Never give out your home address or phone number to an unknown individual over the internet.
  • Meeting with people you have met over the internet is very dangerous. Never arrange to meet with an individual that you have met over the internet without proper accompaniment. This means with your parents and in a public place.
  • Never give out credit card information over the internet unless it is to a very well-known company like E-bay, Pay-pall, Books-a-Million, etc.
  • Watch out for look-alike sites. These sites use a similar address to the site they mimic, but take your money and run. They are not legitimate.
  • Assume that everything you do on-line (email you write, chats, discussion boards, sites you visit) is recorded forever and traceable back to you. This is closer to the truth that any of us realizes.
  • Computers can get sick. Use anti-virus software like Norton, or use on-line sites to check for computer viruses (pcpitstop.com).
  • Computers without adequate security can be "hacked" or taken over by someone else.
  • Many of the files you can download using person-to-person software is considered illegal.
