A list of the top 10 issues teachers face in the classroom regarding ethics and technology
- Students need to be taught the concept of intellectual property.
- Students need to be taught what plagiarism is.
- Teachers must secure means of verifying if plagiarism has taken place.
- The internet can be very dangerous. Teachers must instill this concept in students and teach methods of self-protection.
- Not all information is equal. Teachers must show students how to view information with a critical eye.
- Computers are fragile and must be treated as such. Teachers must ensure that student understand how not to damage them.
- The internet can be a place of anonymity and with this come serious issues. Teacher must show students how anonymity can be abused and encourage students to behave ethically despite the apparent "privileges" of anonymity.
- Teachers must combine all of the major issues involved in using the internet into an Acceptable Use Policy, so that students know what is expected of them.
- Teachers and students must co-construct clear and understandable consequences for not fulfilling the expectations for acceptable use.
